Lost Pet Insurance Offered to HomeAgain Members and New Pet Adopters
Each year more than 10 million pets become lost, with many of these pets finding themselves in harm’s way while away from home. Sadly, one in three pets will get lost in their lifetime. To provide pets with the best protection possible, HomeAgain®, a leader in the pet microchip, recovery and safety service industry, has partnered with PetFirst Healthcare®, a leading provider of pet insurance, to offer complimentary lost-pet medical insurance to all pets microchipped and enrolled with HomeAgain.
Now, any dog or cat microchipped and enrolled with HomeAgain will have the added benefit of complimentary access to an EmergencyFirst lost-pet medical insurance policy – an important insurance policy that covers up to $3,000 (less a $50 deductible) for any medical bills related to injuries the pet suffers while lost. Coverage includes medications, x-rays, diagnostic procedures, lab tests, surgical treatment, overnight stays or dental services associated with a lost pet injury.
When your HomeAgain enrollment has been processed, an email or letter will be sent with specific instructions on how to activate your pet's complimentary insurance. Once your pet is enrolled in HomeAgain, you must call to activate your pet's lost-pet medical insurance coverage. If the HomeAgain member doesn’t call to activate, they miss out on this important complimentary benefit.
“At HomeAgain, our mission is to save pets’ lives. We know from our partners at veterinary offices and shelter organizations that many lost pets turn up needing immediate medical attention,” says Steve Shell, vice president and general manager of HomeAgain.
“Through microchipping and enrolling pets in a national database as part of the standard of care we provide to all cats and dogs, and providing pet owners with added complimentary pet medical insurance, our goal is to reunite lost pets with their owners and ensure these pets get the appropriate medical care so we have happy, healthy pets coming home.”

According to the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), veterinarians believe that pet insurance leads to better care (73 percent) and often leads to fewer euthanasias (58 percent) in situations where pet owners might not be able to pay for special treatments like surgeries.
“A lost pet is a very stressful situation for pet owners. When a lost pet is found needing medical attention, our EmergencyFirst program can help alleviate the added financial burden of veterinary bills and provides one less thing for pet owners to worry about,” says Brent Hinton, chief executive officer of PetFirst.
Additional Benefits for New Pet Adopters
In addition to the EmergencyFirst complimentary lost-pet medical insurance that all HomeAgain members can activate after their pet is microchipped and enrolled, any pet owner who adopts a new pet from a shelter in the HomeAgain network can receive 30 days of complimentary PetFirst adopted-pet insurance. Once the pet is microchipped and enrolled in HomeAgain at the shelter and the owner activates the complimentary adopted-pet policy by calling PetFirst, the insurance will take effect, covering up to $500 in veterinary bills for illnesses that newly adopted pets face, such as kennel cough, mite infestation, parvovirus, ear infection, upper respiratory infection and many other diagnoses.
Since 1995, HomeAgain has been a leader in companion animal identification and lost pet recovery. Debuting in 2006, the new HomeAgain Proactive Pet Recovery Network is a proactive lost pet service that actually mobilizes veterinary clinics, shelters and volunteers at the first alert of a missing pet. With HomeAgain, a lost pet is successfully recovered approximately every six minutes. To date, almost 5.2 million pets in the United States have been enrolled in the HomeAgain program, resulting in more than 450,000 successful recoveries."
