  • Why Treat for Mange?
    • To avoid potentially economic losses associated with mange. It is estimated that 90% of all U.S. swine herds are infected with mange. Mange affects weight gain, feed efficiency and baby pig mortality. It also affects pens and equipment, as hogs rub aggressively to relieve itching. Overall, mange can cost more than $100 per sow/year if not controlled.
  • What is Taktic® and How Does it Work?

    • Taktic® is a highly effective miticide/insecticide mulsifiable concentrate mixed with water and sprayed on the animal or premise to kill mange and lice by affecting octopamine, the neurotransmitter of lice or mange, not pigs. Thus it is even safe for baby pics. The parasite becomes overstimulated until death occurs. Tactic® spreads into the skin immediately after being sprayed onto an animal. Tactic® is packaged in cans, each containing 760 mL. When mixed with water, each can treats about 100 sows.

  • What is the Taktic® Program?

    • The Taktic® program is designed to break the cycle. At Intervet we recommend treating all hogs and the premises twice, 7-10 days apart. We recommend the following maintenance schedule: 

      • Follow up by treating all sows and gilts at, or just before, farrowing. 
      • Treat sows and litters 1 day before weaning. 
      • Treat all boars 3 times a year. 
      • Isolate and treat all new arrivals immediately. Repeat 7-10 day later.
  • Can Mange Mites be eradicated?
    • While the idea of mange eradication is intriguing and technically possible with any effective miticide, reinfestation is a permanent threat for producers who try to solve mange problems once and for all. Therefore, Intervet recommends an effective, economically sound, ongoing control program with Taktic® rather than risking the likely failure of an eradication attempt.
  • What is the dosage for Taktic®?

    • Approx. Finished Spray Volume
      (Coarse spray 70-150 psi)

      Sow/Boars  Newborn - 50 lbs. Growing Hogs Finishing Hogs 
      2.0 qts. 0.25 qt. 0.75 qt. 1.00 qt. 

      • Read and follow all label directions. 
      • Thoroughly saturate a hog’s skin to ensure adequate coverage. Any good quality spray equipment that achieves the desired objective can be used. 
      • Pay special attention to the ears, belly and area between the legs. 
      • Be sure to check the time it takes to deliver the specified amount per animal (spray the solution into a measured container while checking the time). 
      • Baby pigs can be sprayed or dipped in a bucket or spray emulsion
