Debera A. Butler, DVM

Sr. Professional Services Veterinarian,
Mountain States Region (AZ, CO, ID, MT, NM, NV, UT, WY)

Dr. Debera A. Butler is a highly passionate veterinarian with a lifelong love for animals. From an early age, she was inspired by her grandfather’s work as a veterinarian and knew that she wanted to follow in his footsteps. This early exposure to the world of veterinary medicine fueled her desire to care for and heal animals.

Throughout her life, she has always been surrounded by furry companions, especially Cocker Spaniels, which led her to develop a deeper interest in dermatology, particularly ear diseases. Additionally, she has a strong passion for shelter medicine and actively volunteers her time at multiple pet rescues. Her dedication to helping homeless animals has earned her the nickname “The Doggie Match Maker”.

For 15 years, Dr. Butler practiced small animal medicine in Arizona, dedicating her skills and knowledge to improving the well-being of animals and their owners. Currently, she serves as the Sr. Professional Services Veterinarian for Merck Animal Health, where she shares her expertise and experiences through lectures at veterinary association meetings, conferences, schools, and various animal-related events across the United States.

“We have great diversity of thoughts and opinions from some very intelligent veterinary teammates that push me to always work harder, think differently and be better.”

Dr. Debera A. Butler’s story is not only that of a dedicated veterinarian but also of a caring individual with a deep-rooted passion for animals. Her compassion, dedication to her profession, and advocacy for those in need make her an outstanding role model in the veterinary community.

Beyond her professional life, Dr. Butler is a compassionate advocate for homeless or financially challenged individuals who have pets. She recognized the deep bond between owners and their beloved animals and became an initial advisor for Family Promise, a homeless shelter in Scottsdale, AZ, that accommodates pets. This initiative’s success has resulted in its expansion to other locations nationwide, ensuring that homeless individuals and their cherished pets can find shelter and support together.

During times of crisis, Dr. Butler’s dedication shines through. She volunteered her time in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey, providing veterinary care and support to pets and their owners at a special shelter in Houston.

Dr. Butler’s personal life reflects her deep connection to animals and her love for nature. As an Arizona native currently residing in the Northern mountains of the state, she finds solace in the outdoors and enjoys the company of her three dogs, desert tortoises, and frequent visits from wildlife such as elk. Her free time is spent appreciating the beauty of the natural world and participating in activities that promote physical well-being.
