GENERAL POINTS TO CONSIDER

DEWORMING PRINCIPALS

  • Perform fecal egg count (FEC) to determine strongyle shedding potential
  • Deworm broodmares based on shedding status
  • High shedders require 3-4 dewormings/year; low shedders require 2-3 dewormings/year
  • Avoid deworming when risk of parasite transmission is low (hot, dry summer; cold winter)

Pre-Breeding

  • Deworm prior to breeding with drug appropriate for time of year, individual susceptibility & risk of exposure

Post-Foaling

  • If mare was not dewormed pre-foaling with a drug having an egg reappearance period still effective during post-foaling period, then deworm soon after delivery with broad spectrum dewormer effective against Strongyloides westeri (threadworm)

Pre-Breeding Vaccinations

Essential Vaccinations

Risk-Based Vaccinations

  • S equi (strangles) IM/IN
    • Consult your veterinarian regarding vaccination protocols
  • PHF
  • EVA if your mare is at risk
