GENERAL POINTS TO CONSIDER

DEWORMING PRINCIPALS

Perform fecal egg count (FEC) to determine strongyle shedding potential
Deworm broodmares based on shedding status
High shedders require 3-4 dewormings/year; low shedders require 2-3 dewormings/year
Avoid deworming when risk of parasite transmission is low (hot, dry summer; cold winter)

Pre-Breeding

Deworm prior to breeding with drug appropriate for time of year, individual susceptibility & risk of exposure

Post-Foaling

If mare was not dewormed pre-foaling with a drug having an egg reappearance period still effective during post-foaling period, then deworm soon after delivery with broad spectrum dewormer effective against Strongyloides westeri (threadworm)
