GENERAL POINTS TO CONSIDER
Deworming Principals
- Perform fecal egg count (FEC) to determine strongyle shedding potential
- Deworm broodmares based on shedding status
- High shedders require 3-4 dewormings/year; low shedders require 2-3 dewormings/year
- Avoid deworming when risk of parasite transmission is low (hot, dry summer; cold winter)
Pre-Breeding
- Deworm prior to breeding with drug appropriate for time of year, individual susceptibility & risk of exposure
Post-Foaling
- If mare was not dewormed pre-foaling with a drug having an egg reappearance period still effective during post-foaling period, then deworm soon after delivery with broad spectrum dewormer effective against Strongyloides westeri (threadworm)
Pre-Breeding Vaccinations
Risk-Based Vaccinations
- EIV (IM or IN)
- EHV 1&4
- S equi (strangles) IM/IN
- Consult your veterinarian regarding vaccination protocols
- PHF
- EVA if your mare is at risk
