Kerry E. Peterson, DVM
Sr. Professional Services Veterinarian,
Heartland Region (IN, IL, KY)
Dr. Peterson joined Merck Animal Health in 2024. She was raised in Southern Indiana, where her love for animals began at an early age. Growing up near an equine veterinary hospital in Vincennes, Indiana, she spent her childhood riding Arabian horses and caring for a variety of dogs and cats. Her close connection with animals fostered a deep passion for veterinary medicine, and she knew early on that she wanted to become a veterinarian. Mentoring with the local veterinarian at the hospital, Dr. Peterson set her sights on working with horses, inspired by the daily care and treatment she saw in the practice.
After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of South Carolina, Dr. Peterson went on to earn her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from the Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Following graduation, she began her career in the racing world, practicing at Indiana’s racetracks where she cared for Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Standardbred racehorses. Her early years in veterinary practice were marked by hands-on work in the high-pressure environment of the racetrack, where she developed skills for the unique needs of racehorses.
In 2008, Dr. Peterson transitioned to a regulatory role when she became the Director of Animal Health Programs for the Indiana State Board of Animal Health. Over the next five years, she gained extensive experience in veterinary public health and regulatory medicine. However, in 2012, Dr. Peterson made the decision to return to private practice, focusing on small animal medicine with interests in internal medicine, dentistry, and preventative care. During this time, she also served as Medical Director for a prominent small animal practice group until 2021.
“As a veterinarian, I am dedicated to enhancing the well-being of pets and the humans who love them, because every life deserves care, compassion, and a healthy future.”

Most recently, Dr. Peterson held the position of Equine Medical Director for the Indiana Horse Racing Commission. In this role, she played a critical part in overseeing the state’s drug testing programs and serving as a key veterinary resource for racing officials, veterinarians, and horsemen. She was deeply involved in shaping national conversations around racing regulations, medication rules, and ensuring the safety and welfare of horses in the sport.
When she’s not working, Dr. Peterson enjoys spending time with her family and her collection of animals at home. Her small menagerie includes two Labrador Retrievers, Vivian and Pearl, four Exotic Shorthair cats—Beatrice, Midge, Edith, and Gladys—and a retired Standardbred racehorse, Biggie, who has been part of her life for 20 years. Outside of her veterinary work, she finds joy in horseback riding, spending time outdoors, and reading.
