Ask This Nutritionist: Pros and cons of not having to reimplant

Cattle producers can confidently use implants to improve beef cattle performance in a way that is both economically and environmentally sustainable. In this video, Marshall Streeter, Ph.D., associate director of cattle technical services for Merck Animal Health, explains the pros and cons of not having to reimplant.

REVALOR®-XS (trenbolone acetate and estradiol extended-release implants) for steers and REVALOR®-XH (trenbolone acetate and estradiol extended-release implants) for heifers are delayed-release implants. They are a great option in the feedyard. Their one-and-done process enables an animal to be implanted once and then, through delayed-release technology, the right amount of product is released over an extended period giving the animal coverage for up to 200 days.

Multiple black cattle look at the camera.

The cattle get the initial, expected boost from an implant and then will see a second boost 70 days later with the benefit in average daily gain extending through the feedyard phase. Essentially, it’s the expected response from a reimplant program, but without the need to reimplant.

Revalor-XS and -XH eliminate the need to put cattle through the stress of reimplanting and the often-occurring reduction in feed intake after the process. It also means more efficient use of labor because pen riders can stay focused on cattle health.
